"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." - John 13:34 (KJV)
What makes this commandment "new" is its foundation in Christ's own example and its role as the distinguishing mark of His followers. Jesus would go on to say in the next verse that by this love, all people would know we are His disciples. Our love for one another becomes the visible evidence of our relationship with Christ and our witness to a watching world.
